If you've never seen one of our duck races, here's how it works: The public is asked to "adopt" little rubber ducks for $5 each. There is no limit to the number of ducks that can be adopted by one person; however, Indiana law states that only persons 18 years of age or over can adopt a duck and win a prize. Click here to view the Official Rules and Regulations for Ducks on the Ohio. There are two special sales incentives for 2012: For those who want to adopt a larger flock of ducks, membership in the "Quacker Backer Society" is available at various levels. | Once again, Goodwill is offering the Million Dollar Duck sponsor. In order to win the Million Dollar Duck prize, the duck that crosses the finish line first must be one of the pre-selected Million Dollar Duck numbers. One Million Dollar Duck number will be pre-selected from each set of 3,333 adoptions. If the first duck to cross the finish line in the race this year has one of these pre-selected numbers, $1,000,000 plus the $10,000 first prize will be awarded to the person with that number. If the first duck to cross the finish line in the race this year is not one of these pre-selected numbers, the $1,000,000 prize will not be awarded; however, the $10,000 first prize will go to the person with the first place duck number. Million Dollar Duck numbers are selected randomly before the beginning of the race. |
On the first Saturday in August, all of the adopted rubber ducks are placed in the back of a dump truck which is driven on a barge. The barge heads for the north east side of Dress Plaza and at precisely 2:02 p.m., the ducks are dumped into the Ohio River.
The current on the Ohio River moves the ducks down a race course of oil boom.
There is a large tube at the end of the race course that is big enough to admit one duck at a time. The first ducks through the tube win the prizes.
That's how it's done! All proceeds from this event benefit the Goodwill Family Center, a transitional housing facility in Evansville. |
